Guide to Toenail Fungus Removal

Toenail fungus can be an irritating thing to deal with, but it can be treated successfully. In less severe cases, home remedies can typically do the job.

However, many cases require more intervention. For moderate cases of toenail fungus, medication is often prescribed. These come in oral form and topical form, which can be applied directly to the nail. Often, oral and topical medications are combined for optimal results.

Laser treatment is also a great option. A tool will be used to direct laser light that can penetrate the nail to the infection. It’s non-invasive, requires no anesthesia or downtime, and takes less than an hour for each treatment.

If more conservative treatments do not work, toenail removal might be required. This comes in two forms: surgical and non-surgical.

Non-surgical Toenail Removal

Non-surgical toenail fungus removal involves applying a chemical to the infected part of the nail and then wrapping it. The chemical goes to work softening the treated part, allowing the doctor to remove it in a week to 10 days.

Surgical Toenail Removal

Surgical toenail fungus removal is more involved but can still be done in the doctor’s office. A tool is used to loosen the skin enough to pull the nail off. You’ll receive an anesthetic so you don’t feel the process.

Both surgical and non-surgical can be completed on all or just a portion of the toenail. However, the surgical option is typically only chosen if the fungus is causing extreme pain or affects most of the toenail. And conservative treatment options are always considered first.
