Custom Orthotics vs. Over-The-Counter Inserts

When it comes to orthotics, there is some confusion about which solution is likely to provide the best outcome for heel pain and other foot pain. The key is to find the solution that provides you the best comfort plus the most bang for your buck. It boils down to four key elements:

  • Expertise.
  • Quality.
  • Price.
  • Education.

Expertise. Custom orthotics are designed specifically for your feet and are fitted by a podiatrist, not a clerk or salesperson. This way, you achieve the most comfort plus the help and guidance from a licensed foot and ankle doctor.

Quality. In some cases, retailers, that sell generic inserts, have the customer buy a series of inserts over time, which costs more and postpones any eventual potential relief. On the other “foot,” custom orthotics are fitted to your feet from the get-go, constructed of high-quality materials, which potentially reduce or relieve foot pain much sooner.

Price. This is where it gets confusing. In some cases, certain retail stores sell over-the-counter, generic inserts that end up costing upwards of several times the cost of custom orthotics. On the other end of the spectrum, there are some very inexpensive generic inserts that may help a little in the short term but fall short of providing the optimum solution to reducing pain long term. Also, keep in mind that in some cases insurance may cover the cost of custom orthotics. It’s worth checking out.

Education. The key to finding out which approach is best for you is to do a little investigating. A retail store is in the business of “selling” you products. But a doctor provides informed information; educating so that you can make an informed decision about the best solution for you. Remember, the goal is to maximize your comfort plus get the best value and outcome.
