Custom Orthotics and Winter Boots

Kansas City – It’s beginning to look a lot like….WINTER!!  As this week starts out cold and dreary, I bet that lots of us are pulling out our winter boots.  You’ve got the tall riding boots, booties in various heights, thin high heel boots and thick chunky wedges – we love them all!  But, can you wear your custom orthotics and your favorite winter boots together?

Custom Orthotic vs a Winter Boot

The purpose of a custom orthotic is to align, or balance, your foot and ankle.  Custom-molded to fit your foot, they will provide you with the support that you need to keep your entire body aligned correctly.  However, a custom orthotic does not take warmth into consideration at all.  Conversely, a winter boot is specifically designed to keep your feet warm.  Thus, a winter boot will not necessarily have the structure or support that your feet need, but does provide warmth.  Custom orthotics and winter boots – given these two opposites, they seem like a great match, right?

Except, when you try to insert your orthotics into your boots, you may have difficulty fitting them in the boot.  Typically, there will not be enough space to accommodate the orthotic.  If you have full length orthotics, this feat can be even more difficult.  This is why many people invest in two pair of custom orthotics – the full length is best in your running shoes to provide maximum support, but the ¾ length may be perfect to change out into your boots and dressier shoes.

End of 2019

As 2019 winds down, you may consider using up your HSA funds to invest in a second pair of custom orthotics.  If you already have a set of full length, you may really enjoy the flexibility of the ¾ length.  Likewise, if you have a ¾ length pair, you may love the feel and the support of the full length, especially if you are on your feet for extended periods! And, KCFA always offers a discount on your second pair.

Either way, we are here to help!  Take away – you should not have to forfeit comfort for warmth!  If you need help fitting your orthotics in your shoes or boots, please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance.

Stay warm out there Kansas City!
