Focus on Your Foot Health – Things You Need to Know

As podiatrists, we take our role as healthcare advocates very seriously.  Your feet are a very important part of your overall health.  You may be surprised at the link between your feet, and the health of your entire body!  Healthy feet and legs can allow you to be more physically active, which in turn will improve your overall health. And nothing is more important than that!  Included here are things that you need to know to focus on good foot health.

Why your feet are important

First, your feet enable you to stay active, and in turn, this mobility creates independence.  We’re talking about the important things here: your ability to interact in your community, to be present in your relationships, your ability to travel, your level of activity, freedom, and your overall health and happiness!  It’s a tall order, but good foot health can help you to live a long and productive life.

Second, your feet tell a much larger story.  Your feet and lower limbs are a critical factor in developing and/or avoiding diseases that can ravage the rest of your body.  The connection doesn’t immediately seem related to foot health, but it is real.  Some examples of this link include obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and several other conditions.  Strong foot health may help stave off these maladies.

Lastly, your feet are a work of art!  Leonardo Da Vinci said it best when he said “the human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art”.  Just one of your feet contains 28 bones, 33 joints, more than 100 tendons, muscles and ligaments and 250,000 sweat glands.  Taking care of this masterpiece of engineering is essential to keep you active and healthy.

Our blog is full of more things you need to know in order to keep your feet healthy and happy.  Please explore them, and don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions or would like to make an appointment.
